Pentagon declares stability in LA, withdraw hundreds of Marines
The Marines were deployed on June 9 in response to mass protests in downtown Los Angeles over the Trump administration’s immigration crackdown. The demonstrations erupted after Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents raided local businesses, detaining hundreds suspected of residing in the U.S. illegally. In total, around 4,000 National Guard troops were also mobilized.
The administration has vowed that ICE raids will continue as part of President Donald Trump’s broader immigration policy.
“With stability returning to Los Angeles, the Secretary (of Defense) has directed the redeployment of the 700 Marines,” Pentagon spokesman Sean Parnell said, according to U.S. media outlets. He praised the Marines’ “rapid response,” stating their presence “sent a clear message: lawlessness will not be tolerated.”
According a media organization, the Marines will return to the Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center in Twentynine Palms, located about 150 miles (241 km) east of Los Angeles.
The deployment, which was carried out without the approval of California Governor Gavin Newsom, was the first of its kind in decades and raised concerns about federal overreach.
Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass hailed the Marines’ withdrawal as “a victory,” posting a video statement on X and emphasizing the importance of community-driven solutions over military intervention.
